how to frame a giclee print

Framing a Giclée print is a great way to display this high-quality and often collectible form of art. Giclée prints are known for their fine detail and vibrant colors, so framing them properly can enhance their appearance and protect them. Here’s how to frame a Giclée print:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Giclée print
  • Frame with glass (choose a frame that fits the size of your print)
  • Mat (optional, but it can add an elegant touch)
  • Acid-free tape or photo corners
  • Backing board (acid-free foam board or mat board)
  • Hanging hardware (wire, D-rings, hooks, etc.)
  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors (if you need to trim the print or mat)
  • Pencil (optional)

Steps to Frame a Giclée Print:

  1. Select the Giclée Print:
    • Choose the Giclée print you want to frame. Ensure it’s free from any smudges or damage.
  2. Choose a Frame:
    • Select a frame that fits the size of your Giclée print. Frames come in various sizes and styles, so pick one that complements the artwork. You can find frames with or without mats.
  3. Prepare the Frame:
    • If your frame comes with a mat, place it inside the frame. Ensure it’s centered and fits snugly. If your Giclée print is smaller than the mat opening, you may need to trim the mat or use a mat with a smaller opening.
  4. Trim the Print (if needed):
    • If your Giclée print is slightly smaller than the frame opening, you may need to trim it to fit. Use scissors to carefully trim the print’s edges to the desired size. Be sure to leave enough margin to attach the print to the backing.
  5. Attach the Print to the Mat (if using a mat):
    • If you have a mat, use acid-free tape or photo corners to attach the Giclée print to the mat. Ensure that the print is centered and secured in place. If you’re not using a mat, proceed to step 6.
  6. Prepare the Backing:
    • Cut a piece of acid-free foam board or mat board to fit inside the frame. This backing board provides support and helps protect the print.
  7. Attach the Print and Mat (if applicable) to the Backing:
    • Use acid-free tape or photo corners to attach the Giclée print (and mat if used) to the backing board. Ensure everything is centered and securely attached.
  8. Assemble the Frame:
    • Carefully place the backing board (with the attached print and mat) into the frame. Ensure it fits securely.
  9. Close the Frame:
    • Secure the frame’s clips, tabs, or screws to hold the backing in place. Make sure the glass is clean and free from fingerprints or smudges.
  10. Attach Hanging Hardware:
    • Attach hanging hardware (wire, D-rings, hooks, etc.) to the back of the frame. Ensure it’s securely attached and properly balanced for hanging.
  11. Hang or Display the Framed Giclée Print:
    • Hang your framed Giclée print on a wall using the hanging hardware, or display it on a tabletop or shelf.
  12. Enjoy and Preserve:
    • Your framed Giclée print is now ready to be displayed and enjoyed. To preserve it for years to come, keep it away from direct sunlight, as this can cause fading. Periodically dust the frame and glass to keep it looking fresh.

Properly framing your Giclée print not only enhances its appearance but also protects it from dust, moisture, and UV light, ensuring that it retains its vibrant colors and fine detail for years.
