how to get wicks without dreads

If you want to achieve the appearance of wicks or “dreadlock-like” hair without actually forming traditional dreadlocks, there are alternative methods you can use. These methods allow you to create a similar textured and twisted hairstyle without the commitment of permanent dreadlocks. Here’s how you can achieve wicks without dreads:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Hair wax or pomade
  • Hairbands or elastics (optional)
  • Hair clips (optional)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Hair:
    • Start with clean, dry hair. Wash and thoroughly dry your hair to ensure it’s free of any products or oils.
  2. Section Your Hair:
    • Divide your hair into small sections. The size of the sections will determine the size of your wicks. Smaller sections create smaller wicks, while larger sections result in larger wicks.
  3. Apply Hair Wax or Pomade:
    • Take a small amount of hair wax or pomade and warm it up in your hands by rubbing your palms together.
    • Apply the wax or pomade to one of the hair sections from roots to tips. Ensure that each section is evenly coated, as this will help in the twisting process.
  4. Twist Your Hair:
    • Hold the waxed section of hair firmly between your fingers at the roots.
    • Begin twisting the section in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, depending on your preference. The twisting action will create the textured, wick-like appearance.
    • Continue twisting the section all the way to the ends. The more you twist, the tighter the wick will be.
  5. Secure the Twist (Optional):
    • If you want to maintain the twisted appearance for an extended period, you can secure the twisted section with a small hairband or elastic at the root. This will help keep the twist in place.
  6. Repeat for Other Sections:
    • Repeat the waxing and twisting process for all the hair sections you’ve divided. Work your way through your entire head of hair.
  7. Style and Adjust (Optional):
    • If you want to add more texture or definition to your wicks, you can use a hair clip to gently crimp or pinch sections of each twist.
  8. Finish with Hair Spray (Optional):
    • If you want to ensure the wicks hold their shape, you can lightly spray your hair with a flexible-hold hair spray.
  9. Maintain and Restyle:
    • Wicks created using this method are not permanent like traditional dreadlocks. You can undo them by washing your hair and combing it out. To maintain the wick appearance, simply reapply wax or pomade and retwist as needed.

Remember that this method creates a temporary wick-like hairstyle, and the wicks can be easily undone when you wash and comb your hair. It’s a flexible way to experiment with the look of wicks without making a long-term commitment to traditional dreadlocks.
