how to frame a tile

Framing a tile can be a creative way to showcase decorative or artistic tiles. Whether you have a single decorative tile or a set of tiles that you want to display, here’s how to frame a tile:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Decorative tile(s)
  • Frame (choose a frame that fits the size of your tile or tiles)
  • Acid-free mat (optional, but it can add an elegant touch)
  • Mounting tape or adhesive putty
  • Backing board (foam board or mat board)
  • Hanging hardware (wire, D-rings, hooks, etc.)
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil (optional)
  • Level (optional)

Steps to Frame a Tile:

  1. Select the Decorative Tile:
    • Choose the decorative tile or tiles you want to frame. Ensure they are clean and free from any smudges or damage.
  2. Choose a Frame:
    • Select a frame that fits the size of your tile(s). Frames come in various sizes and styles, so pick one that complements the artwork. You can find frames with or without mats.
  3. Prepare the Frame:
    • If your frame comes with a mat, place it inside the frame. Ensure it’s centered and fits snugly. If your tile(s) are smaller than the mat opening, you may need to trim the mat or use a mat with a smaller opening. If you’re not using a mat, proceed to step 5.
  4. Attach the Tile to the Mat (if using a mat):
    • Use mounting tape or adhesive putty to attach the decorative tile(s) to the mat. Ensure they are centered and securely attached.
  5. Prepare the Backing:
    • Cut a piece of foam board or mat board to fit inside the frame. This backing board provides support and helps protect the tile(s).
  6. Attach the Tile(s) and Mat (if applicable) to the Backing:
    • Use mounting tape or adhesive putty to attach the tile(s) (and mat if used) to the backing board. Ensure everything is centered and securely attached.
  7. Assemble the Frame:
    • Carefully place the backing board (with the attached tile(s) and mat) into the frame. Ensure it fits securely.
  8. Close the Frame:
    • Secure the frame’s clips, tabs, or screws to hold the backing in place. Make sure the glass is clean and free from fingerprints or smudges.
  9. Attach Hanging Hardware:
    • Attach hanging hardware (wire, D-rings, hooks, etc.) to the back of the frame. Ensure it’s securely attached and properly balanced for hanging.
  10. Hang or Display the Framed Tile(s):
    • Hang your framed tile(s) on a wall using the hanging hardware or display it on a tabletop or shelf.
  11. Level and Adjust (if necessary):
    • Use a level to ensure that the framed tile(s) are hung straight and level on the wall. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure it looks visually pleasing.
  12. Enjoy and Preserve:
    • Your framed tile(s) are now ready to be displayed and enjoyed. To preserve them, keep them away from direct sunlight, as UV light can cause fading. Periodically dust the frame and glass to keep it looking fresh.

Framing decorative tiles allows you to create unique and personalized wall art or decorative pieces for your home. It’s a great way to showcase beautiful tiles and add character to your space.
